style icon: a young caroline de monaco

Before there was Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, there was Caroline Louise Marguerite Grimaldi.
The Girl from Monaco who, with her chestnut hair and snub nose, was everyone's perfect idea of the prenaturally beautiful, modern-day princess. A latter day rebel, a teenage Caroline was still a pillow-lipped wannabe-ballerina stashed away at an all-girl English convent school. Her romances would soon become tabloid fodder & her jet-setting ways would cement her status as a paparazzi favorite.

Still a perennially well-dressed woman at 57, Caroline prefers Chanel these days. But as a young ingenue, the heir presumptive favored "a wardrobe of pristine classics sweetened with Bohemian flourishes." (x)
Gucci was a strong favorite. Back then the brand was in its heyday and "supplying movie stars, jet-setters, and Jackie Onassis loafers with horse bits and hobo handbags." (x)
From the pretty coat with round lapels, to the iconic horsebit bracelet and the classic Gucci loafers - Grace Kelly and her daughter were one of the brand's most important clients.

Fast forward 50 years and over at Gucci Frida Giannini has taken a page out of the company archives and presented a '60s inspired collection for fall/winter, full with thick-framed aviator glasses and shaggy fur coats. She has also been responsible for Charlotte Casiraghi's (unmistakably Caroline's daughter) equestrian wardrobe for the last four years. Continuing her family's longstanding relationship with the the brand, Charlotte, in turn, has become its sophisticated face. And as such, is strengthening the ties between the House of Gucci and the Grimaldi family even further.

purchases lately

  1. After seeing Charlotte Casiraghi prancing around in similar Gucci loafers, I tried them on in the store - not expecting to like them as much as I did - and immediately had to have them. They don't look as mannish on the foot as they do just by themselves and fit my foot perfectly. They feel almost tailored.

  2. Had to have these Zara shoes after seeing Linn Hagglund wearing them with the most perfectly washed out, straight-legged jeans. Loved the original Christian Louboutin ones that (I guess) Zara copied. They looked so wonderfully classy on Mariacarla Boscono.

  3. Bought this washed silk Equipment shirt on sale at Net-A-Porter. And it's so super soft, I just want to wear it around the house all day & roll around in it.

  4. Same goes for the white H&M blouse. Love the way it falls, especially.

  5. Super excited to read Tonne Goodman's interview with Industrie & what's not to love about tennis sweaters and knit polos as worn by the Seven Sisters back in the day.

a wishlist & recent purchases

A wishlist & recent purchases:
  1. Bella Freud Jumper: Obsessed with this Bella Freud jumper right now. The Ginsberg is God jumper is, of course, a true classic ever since being worn by Kate Moss to Claridge's White Tea and Diamonds tea party back in 2003. I am leaning more towards the Je t'aime Jane jumper, though, as seen on Alexa Chung.

  2. Eyeko liquid eyeliner: Ever since seeing Alexa do her eye make-up in one of Lisa Eldridge's videos with some of the products she designed for Eyeko, I've been lusting after the liquid eyeliner. And luckily...

  3. Net-A-Porter Beauty Box: ...the lovely people of Net-A-Porter put the eyeliner, together with some other rad stuff, into their very own Net-A-Porter beauty box. One product that's also in the box & I've been  desperately wanting to try is the Verso Day Cream. Seems like lately every magazine has been saying that Retinol is the be-all and end-all ingredient of skin products. I received the box in the mail yesterday & can't wait to properly test all the products in it over the next couple of days.

  4. Equipment silk top: This white Equipment silk top walks the line between stylish and comfy wonderfully. And I just bought another Equipment blouse & love it so much already simply because washed silk feels ridiculously nice on the skin.

  5. Gucci loafers: Now I know Gucci loafers come across as a bit bourgeois and even have a whiff of the Sloane about them, but Géraldine Saglio and Charlotte Casiraghi certainly manage to make them look cool. I off-handedly tried them on in the store the other day & wasn't expecting to, but immediately had to have them.

  6. Giorgio Armani foundation: I need new foundation soon &  am very much feeling this Giorgio Armani foundation at the moment. It's part of The Violet Files beauty edit, so I am assuming it's not too shabby.
